A girl who was left brain-damaged due to maternity failings which led to delays during birth has been awarded £20 million in compensation towards her lifetime care.
The girl who cannot be identified under a court order is now 14 years of age.
Her mother had been induced at Northwick Park hospital in Harrow in 2006 following concerns about pre-eclampsia, but she was left on a labour ward for four days whilst midwives failed to recognise that her baby was in distress in the womb.
The girl was born floppy and unresponsive when born due to oxygen deprivation and acute asphyxia and was later diagnosed with cerebral palsy, leaving her only able to communicate with people who know her well and able to walk only a few steps unaided.
Northwick Park hospital’s maternity services were heavily criticized by the Healthcare Commission in 2011 for systematic maternity failings, weak leadership and poor quality of care.
The hospital trust admitted that it had breached its duty of care and apologised to the girl’s family. They also agreed that had they delivered the baby earlier, she would not have been left with brain damage.
The Judge paid tribute to the girl’s parents who have given up their careers to look after their family and because of that devotion the girl is a thriving child.
