A new industry report has revealed that a quarter of divorcees wished that they had considered mediation or arbitration.

The survey by OnePoll asked 1,000 divorcees about their experiences throughout their divorce, and whether their relationship had ended amicably, to discover how widely known alternative methods of dispute resolution are.

Over three-quarters of people found their divorce stressful while a quarter wished they’d chosen another way to end their marriage.

Many respondents acknowledged that divorce is often a challenging process for the people involved. Three in ten divorcees recall having ‘lots’ of arguments during the process, while four in ten wished they had a friendlier relationship with their ex-spouse.

Almost four in ten (39 per cent) divorcees weren’t aware of alternative methods of dispute resolution, while more than a third (35 per cent) weren’t offered an alternative method of resolving their dispute such as mediation or arbitration.

On top of that, a quarter (25 per cent) said they regretted not using mediation and arbitration services to end their relationship and said divorcees should be made more aware of these alternatives to court hearings.
