The Government has launched a new visa, which will provide more than one million Hong Kong residents with the opportunity to emigrate to the UK within the next five years.
The opportunity has been provided by the Government following China’s decision to impose a new national security law on Hong Kong.
Under the new route holders of British national overseas (BNO) status and their immediate families are now able to apply for entry visas, for either two periods of 30 months or a single period of five years.
BNO status was given to Hong Kong residents who applied before 1 July 1997, when the British Government formally handed over the former British territory.
BNO citizens coming to the UK will have access to the job market at any skill level and without a salary threshold but will not have access to public funds under this route, allowing those who wish to want to live in the UK to do so and become valued members of our society.
The cost of the visa is lower than many other visas routes to the UK. A five-year visa will cost £250 per person. Applicants will also be able to apply for a 30-month visa at £180 per person.
The new rules vastly expand the options for BNO holders, who at present can stay in the UK without a visa for only six months.
Following the five years, they can then apply to settle in the UK and then British citizenship a further 12 months down the line.
Home Secretary Priti Patel said: “The UK has a strong relationship with the people of Hong Kong, and we are keeping our promise to them to uphold their freedoms.
“BNO citizens will now have a choice to come and live, work and study in the UK, building a new life for them and their family. We look forward to welcoming these citizens to the UK.”
